The responses of a number of people here to the article yorkes linked to, only serve as evidence for one its key arguments about the deliberate distortion of news. Anyone who can read that and not be concerned should pull their head out of the sand. The argument that this is all a result of decades of neoliberalism is true but so comprehensively misses the point as to lead me to suspect that some contributions to this forum have been made in Braille. Yes neoliberalism led to Trump, and yes Clinton would have continued those policies, but what Trump and the Republicans are doing is neoliberalism on steroids. Policies jacked up to swing wealth and power into even fewer hands and to achieve an unprecedented level of control over the public. People have criticised my view that China is a more reliable partner than the US on the basis of it being a totalitarian society. It is, but increasingly so is the US. Freedom there for an ever increasing section of the population is the freedom to work like a slave, in poverty, no health care, no social services and no hope ......... or to die homeless on the streets. As the article so clearly explains, US democracy is so weak as to be non-existent. It is a plutocracy maintained by gerrymandered boundaries and the corporate bribery of elected representatives....... but hey let's go surfing. Nero fiddled while Rome burned. What do you think future generations will think of us standing by as the same forces which destroyed US democracy turn their attention to Australia?

Im not that political savy but i think you will find most americans voted for Trump because of the negative things you mentioned and voting for Hillary would have just be more of the same vote.

Voters in USA only had one other option which was Trump which was on one hand a stick in the spokes kind of vote and on the other hand it was a well lets just see at least he is talking about some of these issues.

I don't follow it and I'm not that academic or savy with politics, but from what i read and see Trump is at least trying to address these kind of issues, don't know if it will work but seems the USA economy is going fine now.

BTW. in regard to that article as soon as i clicked on it and saw Hitler and Trump in an opinion piece, i just went oh god please no and forced myself to try to read it, it's like people who compare offshore detention centres to concentration camps...it just makes you roll your eyes and take a deep breath and think please guys you are just destroying any credibility or validity to any argument you might have.

The difference between you and me Crypto apart from the fact i don't feel the need to constant abuse belittle and insult people and can express a point or view in a civil manner.

Is I'm also happy to not think i know it all about every topic and admit this especially on topics that aren't that opinion related, economies either work or they don't.

Politics and economics are complicated topics it's hard enough to get a grasp on Australian politics and our economy etc let alone another country i have never even been to let alone lived and breathed.

But that said I'm a typical common man and have typical common friends in the USA so i do understand why these people voted for Trump and understand their concerns.

It's also clear that the USA economy is in a better state now than it has been in recent history.

It is what is and we are all strapped in for the ride.

@indo you have said many times that the US economy is doing well, which it is, but like here in AU its all on the credit card. Have you ever considered the size of the debt and the fact that Trump with his corporate tax cuts, has significantly limited his and future government's ability to collect taxes to repay it? How do you think it would end for you if you spent say a 1/3 more than you earn on the credit card for a few years without paying it back? Add to that mix that the US Federal Reserve is starting to increase interest rates no matter what Trump says and that will ultimately end rain down Trump's falsely self-titled economic miracle. What then for those disaffected Trump voters earning $11 per hour down at Walmart?

........ Trump's success in getting 2 conservative judges on the supreme court will be significant.

The following is from an article in The Age yesterday ......

" ...... The reason is that the stakes are so high. Australia's High Court wields huge influence – as seen in the Mabo decision recognising native title, or the strict interpretation of a ban on dual nationals sitting in Parliament.

But it pales in comparison to the US Supreme Court, which occupies a far more powerful and politically-charged role in national life.

It was the Supreme Court after all, not the US Congress, that ended the segregation of black and white school children. It was the Supreme Court that ruled women have a right to a legal abortion. And it was the Supreme Court that legalised same-sex marriage.

It was also the Supreme Court that tore up restrictions on political campaign spending by businesses and unions, and ruled that the second amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm ..... "

Someone above mentioned the gerrymandering in US politics. Its a fact in the US that delivers the illegitimate Republicans Senators and Congressmen / women in significant numbers. Not every vote in America is equal and some people aren't allowed to vote at all (blacks who have been to prison for example) ..... anyway its the Supreme Court that could overturn those gerrymanders but that isn't going to happen for the next few decades is it .... and are gerrymanders and banning citizens voting good for democracy and the US?

The difference between you and I indoblown is that you love being a ‘civil’ racist while you sink the boots in, and insist on proving that the amazing 80,000 year success story of Indigenous Australians was nothing but a fluke, and that in reality they are nothing but vicious war mongers who bash and rape women, despite an avalanche of evidence to the contrary. It kills you to think that they obviously had a much more successfull ideology about life here than the british invaders and the blood fest that is the enshrined hallmark of the the west. So you vehemently, racistly oppose and oppress any thing remotely like this:

'Australia could achieve absolute decolonisation and shared sovereignty and live up to the reputation we like to have, as a nation deeply concerned with human rights and social justice.

It is wrong-headed to think of “embracing” Indigenous peoples. Those with a western heritage must relinquish their arrogance, rewrite the distortions of their history, and place Indigenous interests at the forefront of social, economic and political concern.

We need to look beyond symbols to restitution: compensation, reparations and resource sharing. Indigenous peoples, through seeking a treaty, invite us to share in building an honourable future. Surely we can agree that Australia is worth it.’

As we all know the only racist around here is you, your the one that never stops banging on about the differences in ethnicity/race and stereotypes and labels people based on skin colour or labels or insults people based on the fact they have possibly the same ethnicity as people in the past that might have done bad things. (kind of a weird concept)

As I've said countless times, i believe all people should be treated equally no matter what their ethnicity/race is or their ethnicity's history, skin colour, hair colour, eye colour, or no matter what they decide to identify as.

So issues such as below, which due to your klan style racism, nearly cause you to have a tremor, and which you plead for a button to save your dim witted brain from, are paramount for not only Australians but the planet.

‘Irene Watson, a Tanganekald and Meintangk Boandik legal scholar and professor, points out that crises such as climate change are a call for a new relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigneous Australians and our environment. She shows how Indigenous moral and relational values provide a sound basis on which to build those new relationships.‘

‘Victoria Grieves, a Warraimaay historian, foresees a Republic of Australia based on the sovereignty of Aboriginal peoples. She says:

Australia could achieve absolute decolonisation and shared sovereignty and live up to the reputation we like to have, as a nation deeply concerned with human rights and social justice.

Surely we can agree that Australia is worth it.‘

Blindboy.....

Sorry, but a little facetious sarcasm doesn't get you of the hook.
You've already swallowed the hook.

I don't need your inane explanation of an abortion consensus .....the one you admit keeps changing.....so isn't .....ahh....consensus.
Your idea of consensus is the half pregnant unicorn variety....
There is no consensus.
Just as there are no unwanted children.
One doctor will never recommend abortions while another has no problem with killing babies at 9 months gestation.
Great consensus there blind one.
Look up Americas greatest serial killer.
DOCTOR Kermit Gosnell.

What I asked for, and what you hypocritically never reveal, is your own moral judgement of when a foetus attains human rights.

After you defend abortion in a variety of entertainingly ways ....

....."abortion is controversial...so the quicker the better"
....."making abortion legal will make people abort earlier"
....." Making it illegal forces women to do things they don't want to do" (like making men and women take responsibility for their actions?)
....."but nature aborts heaps more"
....."killing unborn humans is OK, but not animals cause they have more advanced brains"
....."I'll just ignore your question about aborted babies born alive cause difficult cases make bad laws"
....."abortion reduces crime"
...." Unwanted babies should be killed for everybody's sake...cause they'll be neglected and unhappy" (when adopted by loving families?)
....."I'm happy to accept the dominant view...cause even though it keeps changing its always right"
....."embryos are not conscious"....(so anything and anyone who is unconscious is fair game?)
....."a foetus is not a miniature human.....unless there is a non consensus consensus that it is a human...then it is.....but if the non consensus consensus says it's not....well then it isn't....aha!, so easy."

....... But after all your typing, you then toss away your convincing arguments and jump and hide behind the big doctor consensus guy again and say, "I'm with him"
....less than brave mate.

If you don't know when a foetus obtains humanity then just admit it.....no shame.....just do it, .....man up Blindboy.
....but maybe you are not as lightweight as your earnest but dim arguments make you appear.
Maybe you already see that by admitting ignorance of the fundamental question you will leave yourself open to the terrible and obvious logic that killing something you don't understand the nature of,.....is to risk killing a person.
No biggie though....that would only be risking murder.

....and while your at it you could admit our real hypocritical cultural (as in immoral) reason for abortion as we do it.....so we can bonk as if nobody else matters

"1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience SEARED WITH A HOT IRON; (New Testament, 1 Timothy, Chapter 4)

This thread started as "Do you like or hate Donald Trump". Its gotten a bit weird since then. The reality is you shouldn't really hate anyone. Trumpy was voted in by the people because apparently there wasn't anyone better in their eyes. Its been a strange ride since but we shouldn't be afraid because there is something bigger going on in the background we can't see. The rise of China and Europe, the influence of Islam upon the Euro union and the strange cultural belief alterations to the Judeo/Christian West are all part of an end game where something big is happening..If you cant feel it the air, check your pulse. Jesus said "You hypocrites, you see a cloud coming and you say 'it looks like rain' but you cant see the signs of the times". There are leaders out there who seem like loose cannons but are the person who is there on the day. Don't get worked up hating this politician or that, just choose who you think is best and vote, because your either a player who think they can make a change or a voter who doesn't want to play. I like this scripture …Isaiah 40:22
It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; He stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:....So, fellow grasshoppers, don't hate anyone, do your best in life, try and change the world by being a peace loving, kind and generous person. Vote for the polly you think will be best to prosper your country even if they don't have exactly your views on life, and to finish, pray the rain and onshore stops here on the east coast because I want a paddle.

World ridicules our compulsory voting spewing out a new less caring dictator each year.

STOP! Being sheeple! Empty the glass half full of excuses. Start afresh!

Aboriginal Treaty front & centre. Constitution/Religion naturally go to the back of the line.
Australian Treaty predates all world Law as the most powerful document on Planet.
This is why we boycott the signing. Aussies must take the lead and shine love over world.
None can argue that logic! World rejoices it's new beginning...Peace on Earth.

US Republicans last Australian Ambassador left us in Jan 2009.(A decade ago!..no hurry!)
Trump loves Horzeez so much he neglects to engage a U.S. Ambassador during his reign.
Indicating US President or representative or Army won't be around for our hour of need.
No! I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Most Aussies would relish the thought of no U.S. align.

Queenslanders are praying for life giving rain to continue on westward to ease drought.
Feel free to pray with Queenslanders as Rain is not enough water to last 1 month.
God will soon stop crying & Moses will part the seas for Optimist to have his paddle time.

PM Turnbull left Lib's Wentworth with a $2m hole & new PM with a balance of Power.
PM Turnbull's Dumb Deal with Trump supersizes into PM Scomos Dumbest Deal
New PM sells seat to resident Jews to plug Malcolm's $2m donation hole.
If PM follows lead on Trump Jews to Jerusalem then 13% of votes are rock solid Libs.
Trump's dumb deal with cage kidz can now be honoured.
Lib elites can rest easy on Kiddies Day thus stay in the flock bagging a few more votes.

Should all be sorted by International Kidz Day. Dumbest Deal gives Libs a fighting chance?Should dumbest deal fall thru...due to Indonesia Trade Deal Boycott...

New Zealand Labor controls Oz Libs balance of power...
That involves an even Dumber Double Dole Deal? Go #1 Dumbass Aussie Pollies!

At what point does Morrison’s act differentiate itself from the scum that sold our country’s sovereignty to China for political capital and / or cash ?

More treason.

Aligning Australia with Israel - Israel !!!! Fucking who ? They’re 15000 kms away !!! - puts us heavily offside with our neighbors and mates in Indonesia.
