But a serious misdemeanour...

The eldest is starting to discover music, he's finding that there's cachet in the playground if you listen to various bands or singers, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, he's even into Queen following a mimed version of We Will Rock You his class had to perform down at the local hall. He must have rehearsed it 500 times and still fucks up the chorus.

Anyway, his musical journey has begun and I've got no problems with him listening to contemporary stuff, ain't gonna force no golden oldies on him, though he asks a lots of questions when he hops into my car and music is playing. Not sure how much the Bad Brains add to his status in Year 2 at Thirroul Primary but the good thing is he'll listen to anything.

Last weekend we went away camping and because I was driving and I'm older I got to choose the music. Flying past Sussex at 7am I put on some early-90s rave and his reaction was priceless. It's music, but like nothing he'd ever heard before.

Though by the time we got to Ulladulla it was back to Ed Sheeran.

Gangajang are one of those bands for me if I'm feeling down, throw them on and i can't help but feel happy.

Don't know why, maybe its the sugar can line in that one song, but they also always makes me think of the mid to north coast of NSW.

Gareth and Fiona, always worth a listen.

You sure it's not just the Drones with different members?..sure sounds like it to me.

Gareth Liddiard is the songwriter, singer and lead guitarist for The Drones. Fiona Kitchin is the bass player and back up singer. The other members were too busy for this project. It was great to hear them getting back to that really raw sound of their early material. "You Let My Tyres Down" could sit pretty easily on Here Come The Lies. I find some of the other tracks less interesting but that has been true of the last couple of Drones albums too. A few gems, a few ....... that don't appeal so much.

Anybody catch the interview with Daniel Johns with Denton?

OMG that was a hard depressing watch to see what he has become, i know he suffers from anxiety, but i can't help think his thrust into rock stardom and the journey has taken it's toll i can't even help but wonder if he had just been another front man from an Indie rock band that had got far less attention and was only playing big pub gigs etc that maybe he might not have gone through what he has.

Anorexia, a rare type of arthritis, suicide pact with his brother, anxiety etc

And sorry i can't help judging what is going on in your head when you get a neck tattoo and one that is so damn ugly.

I was never a big fan of him or the band, like most cool indie rock kids i wrote them off at the start, but to be honest years latter i bought Frogstomp and i think it is a good album and although not a fan of there next few albums i can still appreciate that he has/had talent, from then on i think his musically journey has clearly documented what he has become, totally messed up, i think it's really sad, even worse people kind of think its cool or genius.

Probably the best comparison of a similar effect is the transformation of Michael Jackson from very talented singer/dancer to complete freak.

Very awkward to watch and quite sad to hear of his struggles but you can’t deny he is an extremely talented musician. I found the interview fascinating actually

Yeah i read in an old interview with him apparently at one stage him and his brother made a pact that if their life's didn't turn around by a certain age they would both kill themselves.

It was quite a while ago 10 years or more, apparently his brothers life was going nowhere and Daniel had big issues at the time, he went on to say luckily by the age they set (from memory 30) their lives had turned around.

BTW. I have a Daniel Johns story.

In my very late teens, me and a mate went traveling the east coast surfing on the dole for a few months living in a Kombi, JJJ was our go to radio station and just as we were going through newcastle area i remember an interview and bit of music or something played on JJJ from Silverchair or maybe they were yet to change their name from memory "Young innocent criminals", from memory we were even going to go see them or something in newcastle not sure why but it never happened though.

Anyway not long latter latter we got back home and went to the big day out, by this time JJJ was playing them and lots of talk and buzz about them, so went to go check them out on one of the smaller side stages, even before they had started playing the areas was packed out, it was mayhem full packed people started getting up trees and getting on roofs of buildings that surrounding the stage in a quadrangle set up. ( i think maybe Tomorrow had just be released and getting play on JJJ)

Obviously organisers hadn't expect them to suddenly be that new cool band everyone wanted to check out, hence why not on one of the main stages.

Anyway i climbed up on a roof and tried to get as close to the stage as i could, when they come out i instantly recognised Daniel i knew this kid, well sort off.

As earlier that day i had gone and seen Magic dirt (just after their second EP) anyway being early 90's the mosh pit was going crazy, i was in there crowd surfing and boasting up guys, one guy had a Tumbleweed T-shirt on just like me and we both had that long blonde cobain hair cut happening, so we kind of had this connection happen and he would boast me up to crowd surf and i would boast him up, no real words were shared as it was too loud, but there was a kind of connection just rocking out going crazy.

It was weird at the time to think that guy in the mosh pit was the lead signer of this new hyped band, then funny when a few years latter he dated Adalita of Magic dirt, and now its kind of weird to think this guy on Denton is this same young grommet in the mosh pit i was crowd surfing with.

I was present when young Dan was pulled off stage at the Palais in Melbourne and dacked. May have been implicit in the removal of his trousers.

Hey blindy, I’m liking w Crighton latest but not as much as first album just yet, might go watch him at Mona in July tho, other ones floating my boat are marlon Williams latest, Shakey Graves latest, btw stu it’s fun playing different tunes to the kids as they grow up hey,it’s funny the stuff they can get into like brooks n Dunn, Townes , AC/DC , offspring, the darkness, ween , it offsets the lamestream shit they also get into .

Empire is a bit of a slow grower. Maybe aimed a bit more at live performance, more drama, less ukulele, Matt Sherrod's drumming driving a bit harder. Maybe a bit less Aussie too, thinking of a more global audience. Possibly a little bit of the difficult second album syndrome, but still getting lots of play here. Definitely go and see him. I saw him in a small room (Leadbelly in Sydney) last year and it was a great show. Catch them early is the go. I saw many Drones shows at the Annandale and other small venues before they moved to bigger venues.

it was a fav of the sydney punks as well! don't think i ever crossed paths with any GC punks. there were some skins and punks around the noosa where my GF was living. they terrosised the big pineapple one day...running amok on the macadamia nut mobile. the photos of that day still make me fall over with laughter.

The Cure's Permanent Twilight by Anwen Crawford.

Had their greatest hits on in the car the other day. Still a great listen.....then there is their greatest misses which is probably better!

I'm just bringing Tropical Fuck Storm back up. "A Laughing Death In Meatspace". I listened to it a few times on line and then bought the CD which has been in the player ever since. This is very much a continuation of The Drones themes....... loss, angst, drugs, crime, injustice, people way beyond their comfort zones, nihilism. It's a long hard swig on life as lived out on the edge where relationships breakdown as often as cars and all friendships are purely functional. As always the music is as confronting as the themes. There are no pretty little melodies and any sweet sound that creeps in is soon overwhelmed by a scream, a whimper or an explosion of rage. It's all dramatics and dynamics. All this emotionality is a challenge to traditional masculinity. Jimmy Barnes never sang about "Sitting On The Edge Of The Bed Crying". The rock tradition is soaked in sentimentality, but real emotion is rare. Relationships are solved by running away or murder when the man is "done wrong". Nothing is ever that simple here. This is a seriously good album that deserves a wider audience. I couldn't find it in any of the local stores and had to order it online. If you have ever been thrilled and challenged by The Drones, go get this one. I will post the link below.

Cool, I was almost tempted to fly up for that gig and get a few of my old Goldie mates there.

I mean i can see them on the same tour soon in Melb (and might still go), but i use to go to the Shark Bar a bit (sunday sessions) and i even saw the Tumbleweed play there about 15 years ago and Screamfeeder even supported them too like from memory they are tonight.

Hasn't aged too bad, and Aya Larkin is still gigging around every now and again, playing more soul than anything else. He's also helping run R U OK Day? since his brother Gavin, who started it, passed away.
