Mentawai charter boat busted (filmed) dumping rubbish in river at Padang.

Scum bags, yeah sure the river is dirty, but it's a western owned business and should know better.

BTW. Not naming the name of the charter boat, but lets just say, its obviously a Blue boat or more specifically a Aluminum Powered Catamaran that operates in the Mentawai's Telos, North Sumatra.

I just emailed them to say they've been busted and that they can expect a downturn in bookings as a result.
Maybe a few more people do the same and they might think twice.
Although they will probably just dump at sea at night when nobody is looking.

This reply came after I made a few comments on their Instagram feed....

We understand that you are furious, so are we. You can’t believe how sad we are! Fact is that is not people from our boat crew. These guys works cleaning boats in Muara, taking trash from boats and unfortunately he was there without our crew. We already fired this guy from working in our boat and he is not allowed anymore to walk in our boat.
All our crew knows that even organic trash can't be thrown in the river. If they do it, they know they will be fired.
We also found who is the guy who did it and took him to the Police. He already confessed he did it without our authorization.
We for sure will do anything so it never happens again. We love the ocean!!

I honestly doubt this is a one off case.

Ive heard stories of guest busting crew dumping bags of rubbish when on the move at night at sea, or paying locals in Mentawai's to take there rubbish knowing full well it just gets thrown straight in the bush.

I remember one of the Indonesian staff on a charter boat i did a few trips on trying to tell me its okay to throw aluminium cans over the side as break down in a few months. (since seen online possibly not true)

Talk about shitting in your own nest ..This sort of blatant pollution happens all the time in Indo , Malaysia etc etc etc The guy doing the dumping in the vid didn't seem too worried..Having operated in south east asia as a skipper/crew from time to time ,I have witnessed everything from fishing boats to multi million dollar yachts dumping rubbish in harbours yet alone at sea, ..I originally thought most of it came from the ships but the problem is much bigger than them.. Most of the refuelling stations leak diesel through badly maintained lines and hoses , and no one seems to really give a shit.
I hope the owners at least get some sort of penalty , and not just the individual, perhaps that would make all the owners more diligent and vigilant when it comes to keeping an eye on what is obviously a common problem, ,trying to pass the buck here doesn't cut it with me. In the commercial boating world shit runs uphill. If the boat was docked and the skipper was off duty then it's the owners responsibility to ensure any scheduled maintenance/cleaning by non deck crew is done properly . I doubt the crew told him to dump it overboard , they could've done that themselves at sea, ,but it doesn't matter who's telling the truth here , the buck stops at the top.

This conversation is long overdue I think. The amount of people going into the Mentawai region every day and the amount of pollution it causes really needs to be looked into in my opinion. I remember the boat trip I went on and the amount of plastic water bottles being brought on and consumed was staggering.. where do they all end up?? Why can't water be boiled like the good old days? People want continuous luxury.. but at what cost to the beautiful environment they come to enjoy? I don't see big yellow recycling bins all over Padang or know of recycling operations in Java or anywhere else in Indonesia? Where does all the rubbish and plastic waste ( hard and soft ) go to from every boat? This should all be looked into. How much does it cost to dump waste? Who pays for it? Where does it normally go?Every person going on each boat should be mindful of this and what they consume and what they leave. And all the shit covered toilet paper going straight into the ocean.

Saltyone, we did a diversion this May for 4 days and went up river in Kalimantan on a river boat to check out the rangas. Any rate there are 80 of these boats that run all year round with most handing out plastic bottles of water whenever you want, and believe me it gets really hot there without the sea breeze. What we did see on a few boats was the large bottle water stations, so you could get a drink anytime for your tea/coffee cup and refill your own water bottle for the jungle walks. It's that easy to beat the ( insert your no. of choice ) of bottles used daily. We saw bottles floating in the river, which is a national park, and at the end of the trip when asked on how they could improve their operation advised them to go the water stations amongst a few other observations.

No charter boat or surf camp/resort should need to use bottles of water exclusively.

It's easy and cheap to provide water in those huge refillable aqua water bottles that can go on a stand (strapped if need be)

Guest can then just be given a water bottle they can refill as needed.

Tell that to western customers who absolutely, firmly believe that the only safe water is bottled and sealed in little plastic containers. And given most travel advice in such regions promotes the use of these products. It's a hard one to solve . Add to that, those boats are Indonesian flagged and require at least part Indo ownership . Corruption and buying people off is standard and I wouldn't be surprised if the owner/s have or will pay off any concerned parties .. Call me a cynic , but I wouldn't expect to see a big change in the near future.

Only fair to point out that Indonesia are the biggest recyclers of Oz plastic waste.
Even more so since the China Crisis or Green Sword if you like.
W.A. now ship Plastic Waste direct from Freemantle to Indonesia/Malaysia.
Indonesia then shred it,bag it the onto China then sold to back to Oz.( repeat...)

In this case here the Surf Safari boats operate on the Oz/Tourist bank of the river.
Lined with Banks/bars and generally cared for parks as you all say...Hence no bins!
In fact the river walk has dinky little tri-bin recycle offerings to impress tourists. (Very nice)

The surf fleets seem to hide behind shoddy fences that bring the neighbourhood down.
This buys privacy from nearly everyone including the neighbouring police .
Fair to assume some buck passing turns the odd blind eye...

Upriver esplanade & down river fishing fleets appear open and tidy along the tourist strip .

The opposite Riverbank is locals only with bins on every allotment but none get used.
Recycling is practiced widely but in a quirky manner.
Big brands recruiting locals to clean up their image for Shopper discounts/School fees.

Mostly 4 legged critters scavenge the leftover roadside piles. Google Earth examples this.
Local surf operators are akin to this bank of river dwellers that wouldn't bat an eyelid.
One Son shreds Aussie Plastic at the plant as brother shovels Aussie plastic off Surf ships.

Swellnetonians are right to insist Aussie Surfers tackle the Plastic Tide .
Stop & think that 'Aussie Waste shredder' is a job for Indo kids.
Also consider none of us leave shit on a Plane/Bus/Train so why trash this blokes Boat.
Please never think I'm excusing this this grub anymore than our grubby wrongdoing.

Readers can check out the ABC news series on Oz waste.(Early 2018 thread)
It may come as no surprise that N.Z. also dump their lot on Indonesia.
As with Oz we're not talking just plastic here but all the yuckiest toxic stuff as well.
Also note this just didn't start happening as Indonesia were long largest importers to China.

Just got this response from the charter company
"I have addressed this with the boat you are talking about. Don't know what makes you think its our boat we are simply an agent who sells the boat to travelling surfers.

The owner has apparently sacked the crew member who did this and reported them to the local police.

If you want to follow it up with the actual owner and not the selling agent you are welcome to do so here..."

Spent a bit of time in north Bali at Amed recently on the way over to Lombok. Lo and behold on the side of the coast road near where we stayed was a water refill station offering safe drinking water. Never saw anyone else use it in the 5 days we were there. Not very well signed but I suspect people probably think " It's Bali , we won't risk it". Which it what the wife did. Waited for me to test it for a couple of days to see if she could collect the life insurance.

I agree with you all on the water stations supplied by sealed containers, done properly it is a far better alternative . My issue is that I've seen first hand these larger water containers stowed with no proper seal , and passed off as 'mineral water' .I have also known many customers , here and abroad ,who refuse to drink anything that doesn't come from the sacred little plastic bottle. I can only relate what I've experienced ,.hopefully we will see a big push to reduce those shit bits of flotsam in the future , just not holding my breath.

Ive never heard of any issues with those big refillable gallon water bottle things, even though they are just refilled with local water that has gone through reverse osmosis, often done in pretty dodgy looking roadside outlets.

Also read reverse osmosis while removing anything bad from the water, also removes anything good like minerals etc not an issue if only drinking while on holiday though.

saltyone's picture
saltyone's picture
saltyone Wednesday, 18 Jul 2018 at 9:25am

Having a refillable station is maybe a step in better direction than single use bottles. However, if they are still giving people on the boats a bottle of newly packaged water, even if it is for them to refill after its finished it is still a full bottle of water in a plastic bottle that still ends up somewhere. It is still being purchased, being manufactured so still giving the message that people are buying it- supply and demand etc. Let alone all the thousands of little shops all over bali selling them etc. Why can't people drink from mugs or glasses like everyone else? or bring your own empty clean aluminium drink bottle from home and just use that? Just the same as when you leave home to work back in oz? Fill that bottle at the filling stations, or boil some water for 1-3 minutes the night before and let it cool overnight for drinking the next day ( indo) Most places are equipped with a kettle. Trends seem to take off pretty fast in Bali- at the end of the day they want to make sure tourists are happy and these days I haven't met anyone who genuinely doesn't want to see less pollution.

If you want to see an environmentally responsible surf operator in Indonesia you need to look no further than a guy called Paul Clark who runs Pitstop Hill in the Mentawais. Stayed there 3 times (most recently in May just gone) and you literally see no disposable plastic the whole time you're there. (OK...just those tiny straws on the 250ml juice tetra packs)

All guests are given their own re-usable water bottle when they arrive and they have filling stations where you stay with chilled water to put in them. That's your ONLY option.

Paul is super committed to the locals and their environment and waste generated is disposed of in the most environmentally responsible way possible (including the shitters) even though it obviously becomes a bigger overhead for him. He also does his best to ingrain this type of mentality to the locals who work for him as well as the local people in general.

Pity he's part of a very small minority.....

It's only a start but the issue of plastic use and waste in Indonesian oceans has been getting a bit of press and attention of late, the minster for fisheries maritime issues Susi (who owns Susi air) is a very active no BS down to earth politician she is also into SUPing seems focused on the problem as said when she goes SUPing she sees plastic bottles everywhere.

Even saw an article today about the issue https://en.tempo.co/read/news/2018/07/15/056919981/Minister-Susi-Pudjias...

Indonesian maritime minister can choose any proud trad/eco fun raft & canoes to Sup.

Maritime fishing minister would know well more than us of neighbouring Asian studies...
(2014 studies revealed top 2mm ocean surface as fibreglass/paint @ 195 parts/litre)

Better she do nothing at all than stir her toxic Sup thru a shimmering sea of polyurethane.
Sure it's only one Sup...Just one of a million more oversized toxic hulks next week.
If the minister can't set Zero targets on her fun in the sun why would any tourist..Too Harsh?

Just checking back on Indo's Maritime Minister Sheriff Susi who makes Dutto look like dory.
Susi firebombs and sinks 1000 illegal vessels each year as she lights up a smoke on her sup.

Ironically near all folk assume that her lead footed SUP buys her instant green power.
The fact that she stows away and sips from her own teacup earns a frown, flicks the ash.

Eco twist on Maritime tradition Suzi crams SOS & Ships into plastic bottles then Kaboom!
Dutto can't stop perving at the radar constantly drooling waiting for his turn.

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Thursday, 19 Jul 2018 at 4:17pm

Susi is doing an amazing job.

Indonesia has had a big problem with illegal fishing in it's waters including cyanid and dynamite fishing, locals generally don't use these fishing methods because know that they need the reefs to be alive for the future but those from further afield don't care and just move onto the next spot.

Boats that are sunk/bombed are drained of fuel first then sunk, yes you get a small bit of pollution but long term you also get an artificial reef teaming with life and you also send out a very strong message to illegal fisherman. (And unlike if they were just confiscated you don't have the risk of officials selling boats back to these fisherman)

Recently in offshore Sumatra i noticed in two seperate ports the presence of Navy boats that i was told by locals are stationed to deal with these illegal fishing boats.

tubeshooter's picture
tubeshooter's picture
tubeshooter Thursday, 19 Jul 2018 at 6:59pm

haha , yes the local fisho's are very conservative in those parts.{sarcasm}. The borders in Indo cover many areas . They do more than their own share of illegal fishing. And if it isn't illegal most of it should be, lack of quotas, size limits , vessel numbers etc. Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc and even Indo all have very heavily armed high speed vessels to combat the problem. None of it works.

Ha ha...obviously not why she does it, but its a plus.

The important thing is the issues are starting to be dealt with, in regards to illegal fishing from what i hear and see it's having positive change and i know that locals attitudes are slowly changing in regard to being more sustainable.

Having someone like Susi is a huge plus for Indonesia in helping create awareness and change, and the way she goes about things no BS approach is well respected by the common Indonesian person as is the fact she is a real person not just a politician.

Yeah 100% Saltyone wouldn't we all.

Actually areas of Indonesia are now seeing similar problems for instance huge boats are now coming out from places like Sibolga and fishing the outer islands and just netting huge amounts of pelagic species and the local people can't do anything about it.

The problem is these boats are now getting fitted with the technology to find these schools, while smaller boats and local fisherman still only use luck and local knowledge to collect smaller more sustainable numbers of fish from each school.
