Dean Morrison at it again

staitey's picture
staitey started the topic in Monday, 29 Feb 2016 at 8:34am

Now I know this topic to some may be like complaining about the heat in Alice Springs but here goes anyway.

Was out on the Snapper stretch on Saturday afternoon. Smaller than I thought it was going to be, barely any sweep so crowds were in full force…..no worries Saturday at snapper what do you expect?

I was paddling around for quite a while looking for any wave to get me down the point when a reform white water came my wave, I was on the inside sweet! Got up, wave began at little marley and grew into this absolute dream race track. Got about 30m down this gorgeous beast and someone with a Mad Huey's sticker decides it was his turn, looking closer I realised it was Dean Morrison. I screamed every world appropriate for such an act, he decided to turn around and yell at me and when the wave began to barrel I got faded and caught inside and he………..well, he probably got shacked of his dial for the 30th time that day whilst I was left floundering on the inside wondering if that could've been one of the best waves I've ever had……

……Ok so suffice to say I had a shocker for the rest of the session and left to go home a little dejected. We've all had this, you either get a few screamers or you get nothing. But I think I was most disappointed at Dean and all the other pros out there. The extent to which they were going to to deprive average joe's like myself waves was out of control!

I saw Fanning, Parko, The Huey's (Deuy and Lewie in tow) snake and drop in on normal punters on nearly every wave they caught. One of Brent Dorrington's tactics was to drop in and stay high, hope the guy would just give up. If he didn't give up he'd bide his time above the wave's true owner and when he spotted a barrel section would pick up speed to get in front and once in the pit the poor bloke on the inside has no chance. I saw the Hazza's do this as well double dropping in on blokes!

But anyway that's my rant. Deano if you're reading (ha, that's a joke course you can't) you are as despicable as every person on other forums has attested to following similar episodes caught on camera.

What can we do???

After reading this it's tempting to follow the pro wankers around and go left towards them if the drop in on someone. Might end in a court case though. More fun than competing for waves with manners.

I have a mate that no one drops in on more than once. Big bastard,110kgs, all muscle. If he gets burnt he says nothing, bides his time, waits until the offender paddles by then grabs their hair at the back and fucken dunks them.Holds their head under just long enough for panic to set in. Then just paddles off, says nothing no matter what abuse they give. Not only does that guy not drop in again, but it's amazing how polite everyone else in the lineup gets after seeing that.

They have nets and drumlines on the Gold Coast. What are YOU gonna do about it?

how about as a solution , remove all the nets , and then chum the break with Ox blood , might scare Mick off , so you can have some waves to yourselves , and therein lies the problem , stunning that people paddle out at the supabank and expect to ride waves by them selves , any self respecting local , if he didn't know the surfer on the inside will get ," I didn't think you would make that barrel , so sorry I dropped in " sounds fair enough to me!

"This shit couldn't be more fucking off. Don't fucking believe that crock.

If you're a local, sit at the peak, take what you want, but not by burning people, you don't need to. You're position in the line-up is based on your experience.

With that experience you've developed a refined ability and skill level. You can ride the wave from the peak and you know which waves to take, that's why you can sit at the peak-you know where the peak is. All waves have a preferred take off spot, sit there. If you sit on the shoulder, don't expect the best waves, even if you're a local, you're in the wrong place to catch them.

If you're visiting, respect the locals- they get first crack IF they are in position to take them. Stay out of their way. You get the leftovers. Pay attention, there'll be some. Don't mess up when you get one, surfing good is how you get respect and opportunity.

NOBODY ANYWHERE EVER SHOULD DROP IN ON SOMEONE WHO IS UP AND RIDING. If they caught the wave legitimately (see above), then it's their's to ride, and not you're to decide otherwise, for any reason. If the rider caught the wave illegitimately (see above), tell them so when they paddle back out, forcefully. If they still persist, escort them to the beach. Don't disgrace the waves, surfing, or yourself by dropping in. Dropping in is dangerous, for everybody. Settling it on the beach is only dangerous for those involved. If you get escorted to the beach by the locals, you are a kook. If you're a local who thinks being a local gives you the right to drop in, you're a kook.

To all you who whine, "I didn't think you were going to make it," I say, "FUCK YOU!" In that frame grab above, Mick is the reason the other guy doesn't make it. MICK IS A FUCKING KOOK FOR DROPPING IN!

It doesn't matter how crowded it gets, thems the real rules. Pay attention. Be honest with yourself about your ability. Find your place in the line-up. Stop fucking chatting about the movie you saw last week, etc, and learn to fucking surf. If you're not getting any waves, go to a learning spot. Everybody starts at the bottom, if you don't like it, surfings not for you.

Stop complaining about the mainstream media, Jed, they're doing your job for you. Jealous little bitch.

Over everything, stay the fuck out of my way. If you drop in on me, no matter who you are, I will put my board through yours and up your ass. Jungle rules."

I mean of course the average punter is going to lose out if the world's best surfers actually behaved as role models and fostered better etiquette in the surf.

Those first three links underline the corporate nature of pro surfing and that those companies should actually give a shit when their boys and girls play up.
Interesting how so much of the goodwill surrounding Fanning has evaporated so quickly - sponsors take note.
If it's good enough for football players to be expected to behave like role models it's good enough for pro surfers.
People say that surfing is different, the same rules don't or shouldn't apply. You're getting paid money for scores out of ten and to represent your masters, it's exactly the same.

Professional sportmen need to be accountable whatever code they represent. They are selling shit for a living either way so up to the companies who pay these guys to work that out.

Banning photos in the media of pros dropping in is just going to hide the problem. a better idea is show the pro dropping in and the cut the rest of the wave, the only exposure they get is negative. Over a period it will add up, Dean Morrisons shares must be on the way down, did he win a world title? Can't remember, but what I do remember is it's been 3 years since he paddled into a wave.

well its way worse really, for anyone that knows what surfers are like, and knows what the only real rule we have is to manage surfing - don't drop in.

all the other stuff, snaking, hassling etc. are subjective

Rather than ban photos of pros dropping in, it's more the idea of not giving pros the media exposure that their sponsorships are based on. If you were paying someone big dollars to promote your product, would you be happy with less-than-maximum exposure?
You'd be putting pressure on your boy to pull his head in wouldn't you?

lets not kid ourselves , yes Dean and Mick are copping a ribbing rightly so .
But surfing is nowhere near a team sport , comparing to such is just plain stupidity .
They are held accountable because their sport is defined by a set of rules which are judiciously adhered to . Yes some pro's are engaged in competing for points on a tour . but the rest are jsut competing for the " look at me " get rich lifestyle companies that feed off the sport / pastime . Others are right that the media is their avenue , but in this day and age media more mirrors surfing . In taht individuals can broadcast what they want on mediums such as you tube , instagram , facebook etc .
Only catch their is it is often where they can be protested against unedited . Yes they can block posters etc , but then nothing is stopping a blockee from starting up their own page , " ........ is a drop in prick " etc etc .,....
Surfing is man( singular ) against and with nature . Occasionally at such shitholes as this tpoic is on , then it becomes every man for himself , fuck nature fuck everyone else . If WSL has an issue with that then they should take the contests to remote locales AND DON"T ACTUALLY REVEAL WHERE THAT IS .
what the real issue is here , is that the WSL are running the contests , but are also trying to make a buck on the side doing exactly what the " look at me " lifestyle companies are doing , in that its trying to suck on the teet of the past time . They can't have it both ways , 'cause in this modern age the pastime will drag down the PC driven competition/business machine .
Its not as if footballers can go out and start making money just having a local kick to kicks with punters .

Great idea Wharfy, but surf journos for the most part aren't real journos. They are sycophantic slaves of the surf brands employed to write advertorials disguised as articles, painting our "heroes" in an always positive light and selling the surfing dream that doesn't actually exist. So, not gonna happen. Don't wanna end their cushy career or miss out on a VIP pass to the next "connest" or party. I don't blame them really, would be a sweet gig (if you're into that sorta thing).
