Surf trip somewhere in late Oct early Dec

I was hoping to get some insights please. A boys surf trip to samoa last October only gave us 1 good day out of 7. Therefor i was looking for:
1. Land camp with wave outfront or quick boat ride.
2. Not 50 hours travel time(as its only a week or 10 day in total.)
3. Most importantly- consistency. 3 -8 foot shortboard for late 30s non pros
4. Less crowded. A few guys arent an issue but not Bali

I know that mother nature has her way but dont wanna play my odds too much.
We are considering PNG vainimo or banyak island lodge. Png is closer but reading some comments its a higher chance of being skunked. Banyak is touching out of seaon if its mid/late Nov. Worldsurfaris are pushing ppass which i would love to surf but again am concerned as its not a strike mission but rather booked months in advance.
Any other regions or suggestions with this predicament would be great...

Always difficult to find somewhere that's guaranteed a high percentage of good quality days.

Indo is normally one of your better options all year round (obviously, local winds pending for which breaks you're looking at). End of the year you're starting to looking at more monsoonal weather patterns (W/NW winds) so keep this in mind.

How about the Philippines?

Or.. for something different, Taiwan?

I echo Bens sentiments.

Phillipines or Southern Taiwan.

Plenty of late season typhoon swell still swirling around in the pacific and maybe even some north swell will start to show up.

There, or the Ments, pretty much guaranteed waves in Indo.

I think you would be rolling the dice on the Banyaks, if i was looking at the areas of Sumatra id be looking at Mentawais playgrounds area even if its tiny at least you have burger world, far from an epic wave but still heaps of fun think a Noosa pt, or even up Simeulue or Sth Sumatra are consistent in shoulder to off season.

In my experience Oct-Nov can be a shitty time of the year in Sumatra anyway, yeah sure you always have a chance of getting good waves, but I've also been out there that time of year and been totally skunked nothing over three foot with long periods of tiny conditions and devil winds and storms.

Go east of Bali...as far east as you can hop.

Shit! Did I just give some surf-related advice?? New year...

If you're all about consistency... I'd say ppass is too risky for a week. Could get lucky and be at least head high or bigger for a whole week. Could also get unlucky and have no waves for a week straight. Particularly if it's October/early November.
Same goes for Taiwan but you'll prob be surfing mostly alone if you're going searching.
Haven't been to the Phillipines.
Any of the regional swell magnets in Indonesia would be a good bet.

I hear you carpetman and indodreaming. Thanks all for the feedback. Strangely no encouragement or discouragement for PNG? I'm thinking last week of November into December. Ive seen a few threads about it being great with winds and overall experience. Hopefully get some clean 3footers in between swells and pray for at least the shoulder of a swell. Will look at east of bali too turkey thanks. The search continues...

A week

I missed the length of the trip, shit a week is nothing lots of places take a day or two too get too or back from, id take that into consideration.

Dont know much about PNG but expect it would have the same hit and miss lucky dip factor.

That time of year IMO keep your money local. I'm not going to give to much away but any of our coastlines that face west which is really narrowing it down for you and any where west of the Vicco border , the further west the better. Pack the wagon grab ya mates and get some of that southern ocean juice!

PNG (Kavieng) not before Christmas day IMO, but it's high on the 'experience' factor - very laid back. Can still be flat for a week at a time though. Before Christmas day is hit and miss, but every time i've been there (a fair few times) Christmas day through new years seems to switch on. Crowd should be minimal to non-existent.

Sorry - just saw you said Vanimo!

went to png kavieng at the end of oct in 2010, good Indo quality waves, but long waits between sets. 10 wave sets then 10-15 min wait. Had 4 days of good surf, then it went dead flat for four days. But un crowded and laid back.

Agree G-land....just to easy and i have never heard of anyone getting skunked ....some wrong direction days for a perfect G-Land lineup...or some dicky winds but rarely flat .
Have a look at Bobbys Gland instagram ....some pics from late October swell.

Not me goofy, i hardly knew that guy but travelled back with him on the way back to Bali. Excellent surfer and tough as nails. I have a few of me but id rather not show them on here.

Oh yeah October does get good, later on in that trip (and other trips too) in my photobucket we scored some really fun days in october between kongs moneys and speedies, speedies even at 1 foot is an excellent wave if the directions right.

If it's just a week long trip just don't book anything until you see the forecast for that week. Pick the spot thats looking most likely to have swell for the week and off ya go

Goofy yeah i bought highlights of other people and some friends of mine and most of my own photos with a deal of $200 for the lot. Good times good memories..
oh yeah October might have some south and south westerly winds sometimes but still gets pretty good imo when the winds cooperate. better than a lot of people think.

Just a follow up on this trip. Went to mainland PNG, 3hours north of Madang. A lot of daily fun waves, not 6 foot but 3-4 foot fun. I'm always on the hunt for trips outside "surf season" in Oz and can confirm PNG would be on that list. After weeks/months of grovelling and GC points madness for 2 days it was good to just have a week of surfing.... Taiwan is growing on my interest for next time as I keep hearing stories.

Hi Indo. Happy to oblidge, I wasnt sure if anybodys reading as its an old thread.
The local people are amazing and truly interested in us as us in them. We got a welcoming ceremony and the whole community came down and seemed truly proud and happy to host us, I really wish I took some boards as there were a few kids on really some horrible boards and they LOVE the surf. Its very similar to remote indo in a way with roads and vegetation. I have to say amongst the cities there are just groups of men standing around everywhere. We witnessed a pretty intense fight between 2 groups on day 1. You do get eyeballed when popping into the shop and even remotely the guard insisted on joining us when walking up a hill 3 minutes away. My point is that its best to go with some sort of trip/agenda/booking. I dont think my wife would have enjoyed it. All up it was pretty basic but with a wave right in front I couldnt complain. THe wave is indo style albeit the one in front is probably more Canngu/West Java meaning its not pure reef perfection but more like a very good defined beachie. We did travel to left that was a bit smaller on that day but that was pure outer reef mechanical perfection. Surfed 3 times every day, as another person commented. there are quite a wait for waves at times and the surf seems to pulse very erratically throughout the day without any pattern. Defo worth a visit, especially that its quite consistent when OZ is usually not...
