We're down late Wednesday so first surf day is Thurs AM. Wish I was there right now though.. buoy data is off the hook and winds are gusty SE! Even the Mid Coast looks unreal on the South Port surfcam.

Scientific data doesn't translate to actual conditions Benny. While there was swell..The wind was off the hook fucking up alot of places. 20+ hasslepants out at BD's is radically out of control.
Happens just about every time! Gets talked up and talked up rarely delivers. BUT whaddya expect, in the middle of summer, no swell for ages, swellnet calls swell a week away. Just interesting how everyone piles down for the 'biggest' day of the swell when alot of times a couple days either side are even better...anyway local knowledge right?
@ the mid call. It was better the swell near easter

Well I thought it was pretty bloody good - not all time as too windy today but still some very nice waves. Got 3 surfs Saturday on the rising swell with lighter winds. Yeah the wind was flogging a lot of spots today but BD's and another spot we went to handled it pretty well. Only 4 out at BD's for the dawny this morning with light winds. Up to 20 out during the day but everyone went home around 2pm so we got it again for another 3hrs with only 6-8 out. Daly's was getting towed this arvo and must have been in the 8ft+ range.

It was cracking at BD's yesterday for sure and although ive surfed it bigger it was tubing real nice on some which is rare. And I hit Pondy for the late one and the wind backed off. It was 4 to 6 foot and flawless! Overall I think the swell lived up to the hype for me. Certainly more so than Cyclone Freda by the sounds of things.
The only bummer for me is I did my knee at Pondy last night. I was frothing like a kid in a lolly shop but my knee reminded me I am in fact at 42 year old man! I'm off to the doctor today ;(

Nah this Grub is a standup. He runs the "learn to surf" business that works up at Berry Bay in summer. It's called Neptune Surf School or something. He is a real keen tow surfer. Did the water patrol for the Fantastic Noodles Big Wave comp at Streaky a few years ago. Him and AB often team up for a tow.

I dont care what scientific arguments you throw out there, more great white sharks = more chance of encounters with human = more attacks on humans = more deaths and injuries. The situation with crocs in the NT is a perfect example of what happens when a dangerous predatory species is protected and its numbers in the wild increase exponentially.... protection of sharks around reunion island is another.... more animals = more encounters = more attacks. Why people think it is such a travesty to kill a few great white shark to save a human life but don't blink at the thought of chucking a fillet of flake on the BBQ is beyond me. do you want this explained or written to satisfy your own current understandings give yourself three seconds to decide if you want the truth or your accumulated version of the truth.
2014, new 26, 000 year cycle starting, time to set parameters. Sharks still in old cycle. Most humans are too. How many of you thank your food as you eat it- including sharks-fuck all.. All species have a common awareness- radio player- sharks all over the world know their food stocks are down but human laws allow them to come and have a taste test- nearly always fatal. Plus we now invite them to come and watch us in cages with the beautiful smell of bait and potential food- fuck i can smell that pizza- i love u dominoe's- can i have that extra diver in the rubber as well, he looks tasty especially with that chum hanging off his wetty.
sharks number one priority is survival and food is top. Slow meat like people swimming are gold, especially to old sharks. So we either restock the sharks natural food sources, which creates industries and sustainable food supplies for sea creatures and humans. Or we stop using the ocean, unlikely or we do do what you will think is the mad scientiect gone haywire.
Yes we cull, but we do it with honour. But we also add a flavour that discourages sharks to come inshore for food.
Everytime we kill a shark, we thank it, we even use the most powerful ancient word of all time- NAMASTE- meaning, thank you for giving up your lifeforce to give us life. Every shark is connected by the shark communication frequency- the signal sent out is humans will now kill us and they will if they have too- but if we dont restock their food chain, the old sharks will once gain pick easy human targets- But the honouring of the killing is paramount. I see sharks lots, I communicate my acceptance of them and they say hello and swim off.
Sharks are a primitive consciousness creation that have limitations in their behaviour. Firstly they want to survive but their understanding of fear and love is very very primitive. Think positive things about sharks, recognise their magnificence as an ancient marine creation, but if you face one in a confrontation, call its bluff, human consciousness has improved so much more than a shark, intimidate it, let it know that you can hurt it. Noise very important, water will conduct vibration, if you can establish a vibration that unsettles a shark, it will retreat. My suggestion is a low sound repeated, i would repeat the word namaste time and time again as this sound/word/ has been used for thousands of years and all earth beings know it's vibrational harmonic. But in saying that, if u die, u die, I have died twice this life and it is the best/ peaceful/fulfilling experience i have had- but not one to go out and do to escape.
sharks, i love them, they love me, lets start getting serious about giving them a good feed again, the ballot's in, sharks not into the pritikin diet. Number 1 rule, you fear a shark it picks up the vibration, you remember you are a valued creation of life and the shark recognises this and swims past. LIfe loves you and state that you do not want to be attacked by a shark and so it shall be done- intention plus vibration produces experience. dont fear sharks, love them for the beautiful beings they are, and if they get too close, give them a hard smack on the nose.

@dave the rave, I am always open to differing opinions and I respect your point of view, I think you agree that something has to be done in order to reduce shark fatalities, whether it be replenishing food stocks or limited and respectful culling and getting rid of shark cage diving.

I 100% agree that shark cage diving should be outlawed, I think you summed up the reason why very eloquently, it is classical conditioning at its finest, unfortunately not with a positive outcome. I also think other methods to scare juvenile sharks when they interact with humans could help keeping them away from our arms and legs as they get older/larger. If Great whites see humans as a possible threat they may think twice before attacking us and settle on making dinner out of something less likely to injure them.

I personally am not very spiritual but respect your opinions on communication with sharks/vibrations etc if it works for you good on ya.

I do however think it is necessary in order to prevent a continual rise in shark attack fatality rates to start to control the white shark population and see nothing wrong with doing it, you don't hear an outcry every time a tuna is caught in fact i'm sure many of the so called shark activists enjoy a tin of tuna every now and then, all that great whites are, are big fish with big teeth.

Thankyou for imparting your wisdom, Namaste

No I'm not, you can't take an apex predator out of the equation or else you'll destroy the whole ecosystem from the top down.

Also we aren't killing these sharks to east or for any other purpose, they're just killing them because they are getting in the way of us having fun in the ocean, that's not right. Totally different situation.

Fair enough, I am just interested in peoples opinions on why we shouldn't kill great white sharks, I personally don't see the difference between killing a GW compared to killing any other animal species.

I do understand the argument of not removing an apex predator species from the eco-system due to the potential adverse effects that could have, that being said throughout history species, including apex predators have become extinct and nature has found a way to bounce back, the theory that removing the GW from the ecosystem would cause a chain of events that would be catastrophic for the marine environment is a hypothesis, there is no scientific evidence of this happening in the past, for example when the tasmanian tiger was eradicated the tasmanian eco-system did not collapse . Again, that being said I do not think it would be a wise or ethical idea to remove the GW species from the face of the planet.

As long as we don't hunt the GW's to extinction is removing sharks that hang around areas that are popular with beach goers/surfers and/or removing sharks that are in the direct vicinity of an attack that horrific? I'm sure they could go to use in the scientific community for study purposes so that we can learn more about the species and maybe come up with a solution that protects humans without having to resort to catching and killing the sharks.

That is a valid point evo surfer, but whales dont attack people, any wild lion or tiger that attacks a human is more often than not killed especially if it is seen hanging around areas that humans frequent in the days after an attack, also lion , tiger and rhino fatalities have not skyrocketed in the same way as GWS fatalities have in the last few years,.

I would have nothing against killing a lion or a tiger that had attacked someone going out for their morning run if it was still in the general vicinity after the attack and posed a risk to the remaining human population. I am definitely not for wiping out a species from the planet completely but am for some sort of risk management plan that would reduce the frequency of shark fatalities especially in WA. Maybe the answer isn't killing the animals but catching them and scaring the s**t out of them so they think twice about coming in close proximity to humans in the future. Something has to be done though before things get out of control and that is the inevitable, look at reunion island as the perfect example, you cant even enter the water there. At one point or another in the future shark populations will have to be controlled or we will no longer be able to enter the ocean without significant risk of being attacked, and this will happen, whether it be now or in 50 years time eventually the government and the people will say enough is enough. If killing sharks is not the answer then significant resources should be put into finding the answer to the question of how humans and sharks can coexist without fatalities on either side

Do we have to wait until someone is taken once a month or once a week before something is done? Why wait and put more families through the tragedy of losing a loved one if we can act now and prevent more of these events from happening?

This is just my personal opinion and I am aware that I am in the minority, but it seems to be the majority of people protesting are the ones to far removed from the problem for it to directly affect themselves e.g. people far removed from the locations most affected by the increase in attacked or people who do not spend a significant amount of time in the ocean.

@ evo surfer, I dont think the GWS is as endangered as you might think - quote directly from a recent study into great white shark numbers off the united states coasts

"Things are looking up on the other coast too. When experts reevaluated data from a 2011 study of great white shark populations off the coast of central California, they estimated that there are about 2,400 adult great white sharks in the area—and perhaps, says Burgess, "several times more than that.""

Thats the massive point for me.what catagorizes 'endangered'? 60mins had the south african researches estimating 500 gw's in south africa alone! There is no doubt numbers have bred up . pretty much sighted the whole way around australia now. What about all the times after an attack theyve missed the shark?

Joel Eugene Slater-Burrows's picture
Joel Eugene Slater-Burrows's picture
Joel Eugene Sla... Saturday, 4 Oct 2014 at 2:47am

The general consensus in the commercial fishing and diving communities, the populations that spend the greatest amount of time on and in the water, is that sightings have gone up significantly since the 90's, this is just anecdotal evidence but along with recent studies into population numbers is enough to show that the GW population is no longer under threat of extinction and a few specimens taken out of the gene pool wouldn't have any negative effect on the survival of the species.

How about instead of killing which is actually senseless, stupid and downright disrespectful, look at other alternatives , of which there are. The statistics are that the majority of incidents with sharks are with surfers and or divers, and the all black neoprene "lets just look like a complete seal shall we" wetties just don't seem like such a good idea anymore. These new suits look pretty funky in my opinion and shouldn't Ripcurl/Billabong/Quiksilver really be getting on board this one?? It just makes alot of sense and certainly more cost effective as well. A win/win.
